Two large erratics have been excavated in a new housing development in Ferndale, Washington. They were found during construction at Malloy Village, which is north of Ferndale High School. The developers, Michael and Katharine, moved them to the new neighborhood park. While looking on the internet for information on erratics, Katharine found the Donovan erratic story on this blog, and now here they are, on the blog, too! Serendipity reigns supreme.

These are both great examples of Jackass Mountain Formation conglomerate, similar to the Donovan Avenue erratic in Bellingham. This formation is found in the area around Hope, B.C. and Manning Park. One of these boulders is quite round, and is 7 1/2 feet high. The larger is 9 feet high, and is a little more angular; it has some nice glacial polish and subtle striae on the west face. Numerous rounded rock fragments, or clasts, can be seen in the boulders. Most are either granitic or volcanic, but there is quite a variety- see how many different rock types you can identify. Both erratics were found near each other, mostly buried, less than 200 yards south of their current position; Michael used a bulldozer to roll them to their new places. It took 6 hours to move the more angular one one; the roundish one was easier. There are a number of much smaller erratics in the field south of the new houses.

Katharine and Michael hope that these big boulders will be visited by Ferndale school groups on field trips. The plan is to make a plaque explaining the boulders, and the complex history of plate tectonics that brought the Jackass Mountain conglomerate from a far-off island arc to North America during subduction and terrrane accretion.

Getting there: NW Geology blog readers are paticularly invited to come visit these cool glacial erratics. Use I-5 exit 262 (Ferndale) and go west less than a mile into downtown. Turn right on either 2nd, 3rd, or 4th and then turn left in one block on Vista Drive. You will shortly arrive at a roundabout near the High School- veer right on Malloy. In 1.1 miles, turn right on Calico Loop into the Malloy Village subdivision. I guarantee you will not miss the erratics on the right, before the end of the cul-de-sac. I walked in and was surprised to find such a huge selection of flowers candles and gifts… and so much more! If you are looking for those little stuffed animals that interact on the computer called Webkinz they have them along with many other stuffed creatures.

Also what stood before me was a wonderfully decorated tree. Beautiful ornaments hanging there looking all sparkly and wonderful. I wandered around the store to find just about everything imaginable.. Different areas gave way to treasures everywhere. As I was taking another look around I grabbed an Advent calendar for my girls.. Every year I find one that opens a new window for each day until Christmas with a little piece of chocolate hidden inside. Even though they are older now, it is a tradition..My daughter came in to see what was taking me so long and her eyes lit up. Along with this I discovered a special area dedicated to my heritage and depending on which side you are on it is either all Swede or Norwegian. There is a wonderful selection of foods like lingonberry sauce, ginger snaps and pickled herring.

I was so excited to see all of this and more…a dog dish! Wuff Da. Priceless. You would have to have been raised around a bunch of Scandinavians to understand. Uff da!

I also discovered that they are hosting a Scandinvian Open house this coming weekend on November 5th 2009. And good sources tell me that someone is making homemade Lefsa. Best around they say… I heard some other stories as well but they are best told in person.

So if your in Ferndale stop by for a little Scandinavian flair and take a look around. I am sure you will find something fantastic for someone on your list.

It is this community spirit that brings people to Ferndale. The next big event is the Christmas tree lighting ceremony on November 4th at 5pm. I drove by the tree being uprighted on Saturday and look forward to see it glowing on Friday. Perhaps it will inspire me to find the movie that always comes out of the cabinet at this time..
